1st Telsig Conference

Title: Technology-enhanced learning and EAP in the post-Covid-19 era.

Call for Papers

Title: Technology-enhanced learning and EAP in the post-Covid-19 era.

Date: 3rd and 4th October 2020 (Saturday and Sunday)

Location: Zoom

In January 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic changed our world. Universities around the globe had to cease delivering face-to-face classes and switch to remote teaching models, often in haste. The mass clamber to mobilise resources and to reimagine EAP delivery through technological means at such breathtaking speed has been nothing short of herculean, and realisable only because of the ‘pulling together’ and good will of EAP educators and administrators. With disruption on this scale and its longer-term impacts yet to be realised, it seems only right that the inaugural BALEAP TEL SIG conference be a place to take stock and to examine the role technology has played in overcoming these challenges and also to consider how it will continue to play a major part in EAP’s future.

For the first BALEAP TEL SIG conference, there are four broad technology-related objectives, which are to understand:

  • the response of EAP course leaders to the challenge of moving EAP course delivery online
  • how EAP students and teachers have been affected by this new method of delivery
  • the changing nature and dynamics of EAP teaching and learning
  • the future role of technology in EAP.

Below are some of the research questions we aim to answer:

  • How have EAP teachers adapted to the challenge of teaching online?
  • Post-Covid 19 teaching: Will we still need classrooms?
  • What does it take to become a Post-Covid 19 EAP teacher?
  • How will EAP courses be delivered in the short to medium term?
  • How can we make new technologies available to all students?
  • What strategies will universities be implementing from now on (i.e. September onward)?
  • How have EAP tutors adapted specific aspects of the curriculum? E.g. reading or writing activities.
  • What has been the impact of online assessments that took place this year?
  • What are the implications for peer observations and quality control in EAP? Can certain online tools make up for the lack of face-to-face observations?

  • Workshops should be of at least 30 minutes long with 10 minutes for a Q/A session.
  • Presentations should last 20 minutes with 10 minutes for a Q/A session.
  • Proposals need to be related to at least one of the themes above or answer any of the research questions of the conference.
  • Any research related project should have been conducted during the last 12 months or when the COVID-19 situation started.
  • Proposals need to be related to some aspect of learning technology or the pedagogy behind using technology in the classroom.

Word limit: 200-300 words

Please send your proposal by 25th August 12:00 pm UK time.
